The winter Months in WRAP are notoriously busy for campaigns and two topics that are rarely out of the spotlight are the management of food waste, as well as plastics, which are often interlinked.
This March, WRAP is launching two campaigns that aim to tackle both subjects and we would love Local Authorities to get involved so that we can make a positive impact.
Clear on Plastics is a WRAP campaign supported by The UK Plastics Pact. It exists to cut through the confusion and give citizens clear, evidence-based information on plastics and sustainability, allowing them to make their own informed choices. The campaign aims to make citizens feel more well-informed about plastics in order to make their own, sustainable choices; with content based on the latest citizen conversations, online and in the media, in order to achieve reach and impact.
In March, WRAP will launch our first citizen campaign encouraging people to recycle plastic bags and wrapping at supermarkets. Flexible plastic packaging represents nearly a quarter of all UK consumer plastic packaging, yet only 6% of it is currently recycled. Although some local authorities offer a kerbside collection of plastic bags and wrapping, the majority don’t yet have the means to do so, therefore front-of-store collections are a useful outlet which local authorities can encourage residents to use.
You can support by encouraging citizens to recycle plastic bags and wrapping at front of store collection points. The Recycle Now and Clear on Plastics team provide a toolkit (including assets and actions for partners) for you to download and share with your communications teams to prepare for the campaign going live on 28th March. You can register for the webinar scheduled for Tuesday 1st March at 2:30pm by visiting our website.
The following week, 7-13 March, is Food Waste Action Week 2022. The aim of Food Waste Action Week is to create lasting change that helps to deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving global food waste by 2030. Last year lots of you supported the week and we would love it if you were able to get behind it again this year. Local authorities played a crucial role in engaging householders, and we are looking forward to working with you again this March.
The Food Waste Action Week team are running a webinar covering the key theme of the week, creative concepts, media plans, and ideas on how you can take part. Click here to register for the webinar scheduled for Thursday 24th February.
Your Partner Pack is readily available on our website, where you can look at the campaign assets. If you have any questions about Food Waste Action Week, please contact harriet.rockliff-nally@wrap.org.uk.
A recent campaign that encouraged children from primary schools to take protecting the environment into their own hands recently came to end. Back in September 2021, we launched the Action Pack Recycling Challenge competition. We asked young people aged 4–11-year-old to design a poster or film encouraging others to recycle and use the Recycling Locator.
The response we had was truly amazing. The judging panel looked at every entry’s creativity, clarity and the impact of the message to encourage the use of Recycle Now’s Recycling Locator.
We all know that educating Children and young people is vital in building a sustainable future and the winners of the competition created an inspiring and entertaining short film.
First place, out of over 700 entries, went to QB EcoWarriors at Queensbridge Primary School for their fantastic video! Head to the Action Pack website to watch it and to find out about the second-place winner, runners up, and prizes.
