Emma Elston MBE, CEO of container repair and refurbishment company UK Container Maintenance (UKCM), discusses the importance of repairing and refurbishing waste containers.

The circular economy, alongside our obligation to reuse and recycle, is very familiar to us all in the waste industry, with many organisations now opting to refurbish their containers and thereby improving their carbon footprint. However, the refurbishment process also affords an opportunity to make up to the minute improvements, delivering enhancements in areas such as health and safety, security and asset longevity.

Waste containers are often in the public domain so, it is essential that they are maintained to the highest of standards. Providing regular maintenance and container audits ensures that they are not only fully operational and safe, but your investment is protected and future-proofed.

Upgrade Your Kerb Appeal

Sometimes, you only get one chance to make a good first impression, and while you may be focusing on what’s happening on the inside of your business, your containers are often at the very forefront of your business. They are your corporate image. They are your biggest sales tool so, use them to your advantage.

Substantial Cost Savings

Metal waste containers in particular present a prime opportunity for substantial cost-savings and increasing your assets. Due to the durability of the material, steel containers can be easily and efficiently refurbished and restored. Should you have the need to rebrand or change material streams. These containers can change specification with modifications, colour changes and the application of new parts and logos.

Typically, manufacturers give containers a lifespan of approximately 7 years or under however, at UKCM we take great pride in refurbishing containers which are 20, 30 and even 40 years old. Notably, across our 25 years of service, we have saved our customers over £217 million, with the refurbishment and repair of a remarkable 1.8 million waste and recycling containers.
