Wales is the first UK country to recycle more municipal waste than it sends to landfill, according to the newly instated natural resources Minister, Alun Davies. The local authority reporting system, Waste Data Flow, shows that Welsh councils reused or recycled 800,000 tonnes of waste in the year leading up to March 2012, and by comparison landfilled 700,000 tonnes. A new Welsh Government report has been released to allow Welsh residents to track the end destination of their recycling, designed to allay fears that separated recyclables are still being landfilled. The minister commented: “I appreciate that separating out and recycling our waste takes a little longer than simply throwing everything in the bin, and this is why the Welsh Government believes people have the right to know how their recycling is used”.
