With new recycling legislation set to take effect in April 2025 for commercial businesses with more than 10 employees, companies must consider how to store different waste fractions before collection. This legislation will come into effect for all companies in April 2027.
The legislation mandates separating waste into at least three categories: general waste, dry mixed recycling, and food waste. In some instances, glass may also need to be separated. However, many commercial customers may find it impractical to accommodate up to four-wheeled bins of varying sizes, as they take up valuable space, can be difficult to manage, and are prone to being moved or blown over around their premises.
To overcome these problems, Storm has developed a 1280 litre bin with a split 60/40 compartment design. This will enable the 770 litre (60%) compartment to be used for dry mixed recyclables, and the 510 litre (40%) section to be used for general waste – or vice versa, depending on the user’s needs. A separate two-wheeled bin will still be required for food waste collection.
The Storm split bin features a specially designed locking lid system, ensuring that one compartment remains securely closed while the other is emptied. Even under heavy loads or during collection, the locked compartment will not burst open. Additionally, the bin’s two lids can be ordered in different colours to help users easily identify where to dispose of waste.
Available on new 1280 and 1100 litre container orders, the new system can also be retrofitted to existing bins through the Storm Plus refurbishment service, regardless of the manufacturer.
