So, how was your Easter?

Filled with chocolate and lots of relaxation I hope.

Over the bank holiday weekend, like most Easters, I found myself reflecting on the amount of packaging I have to put in the recycling bin from the chocolate that the Easter Bunny has left me.

This year was a bit of an exception however, not because the chocolate didn’t arrive (that would have been terrible!!) but because of the packaging on the eggs that I received. I was pleasantly surprised if I’m honest.  The only bits that I had to pop in my recycling bin were some foil and a small bit of cardboard.   The chocolate was in no way compromised by less packaging and I felt like I was doing my bit for waste minimisation, as I devoured both halves!!

I think it is fair to say, the Easter egg has long since been cited as an example of how products can sometimes be over packaged, but compared with 10 years ago there appears to be more choice for consumers wanting an egg that isn’t lavished in cardboard, plastic and ribbons.

Ultimately, we probably all understand that demand for products is consumer driven, so next Easter each and every one of us has the ability to capitalise on that increased choice and minimise our waste footprint.  Happy Easter!  (for next year!)
