RWM proved to be an exhilarating two days, brimming with networking opportunities and a showcase of all the remarkable innovations taking place within our sector. I was so busy chatting away at the LARAC stand that I missed the chance to get my Food Waste book signed by keynote speaker Tristram Stuart! However, amidst the busyness, I did get away a few times to see some of the panel debates and seminars. Most notably, I had the pleasure of attending a panel discussion titled 'Women in Sustainability' and had the privilege of seeing our very own Dr Wendy Fail as a panellist. The panel discussion was nothing short of inspiring as we heard from women who have fearlessly pushed boundaries, both in their personal journeys and within a historically male-dominated sector. Their stories were a testament to the power of determination and women's vital contributions in shaping our field.

The Prime Minister's recent speech raised eyebrows as he backtracked on environmental policies and pledges, even mentioning a meat tax that he promptly scrapped. However, it never existed in the first place. His seemingly throwaway comment about the scrapping of the introduction of ‘seven bins’ left us perplexed. Shortly after, DEFRA sent an email announcing "Simpler Recycling," adding to the confusion.

Building on the intrigue, DEFRAs LA Engagement Forum was rescheduled to November following the cancellation of the October session. The anticipation for this forum is palpable as we eagerly await more insights into consistency and, perhaps at long last, the government's response we've all been eagerly waiting for.

On a more positive note, the upcoming LARAC UK conference is just around the corner. I am brimming with excitement at the prospect of welcoming a fresh cohort of Scholars. It's an opportunity to inspire and be inspired. On day two, alongside Cindy from our Executive Team, I'll be supporting a workshop. Together, we aim to contribute to a rich learning experience for all attendees. Tickets for the conference are now sold out, but you can get yourself or colleagues on the waiting list here.

In a bittersweet farewell, we bid adieu to Stephen Gilfillan, affectionately known as 'Scottish Steve.' Steve has been supporting the policy work at LARAC as I got up to speed with the job. It's not a permanent goodbye but a "see you soon." His contributions these past eight months have been invaluable, and his presence will be missed until our paths cross again.

On reflection, September has been full-on; from perplexing speeches to unexpected forum changes and from farewells to eagerly anticipated conferences, it's been a rollercoaster ride. Not to mention responding to the EPR draft regs consultation, akin to wading through treacle while eating dry crackers. But such is the nature of our work, filled with challenges and opportunities that keep us engaged and committed to making a difference in our field.

I will end this update by urging all LARAC members to check out our newly upgraded LARAC website! If you find something is not right on the new site or have issues logging in, please do let us know by either completing the “contact us” online form or email admin@larac.org.uk
