In her speech on the environment on 11th January 2018, Theresa May made reference to her election manifesto where she pledged, “to make ours the first generation to leave the natural environment in a better state than we found it.”
She vowed that the government would step up to its proper role as an engaged and active participant to protect and enhance our natural environment, while incorporating all existing EU environmental regulations into domestic law, following Brexit.
As one of Europe’s most advanced material recovery facilities Re-Gen Waste Ltd’s vision is to generate a cleaner future by offering customers the most convenient and environmentally friendly way to recycle, so we were delighted to hear what the Prime Minister had to say.
We genuinely hope that the government will actively engage with the Recycling and Waste Management Sector, so that we can collectively help to protect the environment while increasing our recycling rates.
In most recycling research, we are told that difficulty and convenience are the most significant factors in determining participation by householders. It is reflective of the wider populations’ mind-set. Ultimately the recycling service has to be both convenient and efficient in order for them to participate.
Local authorities need to encourage the maximum number of people to recycle the maximum volume of rubbish, weighed against the cost of processing the material, and the potential financial benefits (from reducing landfill costs, and selling recyclable material).
They are finding that household friendly schemes such as co-mingling recyclables (plastic, glass, paper, card, tins and cardboard) in blue bins, are more preferable to residents than pre-sort schemes and that working with advanced MRF’s like Re-Gen, is actively improving the UK’s recycling rates. We know what materials can be recycled and what can’t, who will take the waste and if we can get a second use.
At Re-Gen Waste Ltd we make it easier to recycle household materials by offering local authorities a co-mingled blue bin sorting service, so ultimately less waste ends up in landfills or our waterways.
Our Newry facility has an in-house R&D department, which includes a stand-alone engineering and fabrication team (logistics and plant) enabling us to make new machinery and operational efficiencies. We can respond immediately to market demands and are better equipped to defend ourselves against the challenges from large customers altering their specifications.
Invention and innovation are the lifeblood of our young and dynamic company and we are determined that whatever the waste problem may be, we will find a way to solve it. We offer sustainable solutions to domestic and commercial waste and are committed to a healthy environment for the next generation.
