This month we have information for our Wales and Northern Ireland members plus an update on POPs
Consultations Published
The Wales Government published a consultation on the enforcement regime for extending the collection of separated recyclables from non-domestic premises, together with their proposals for collections from these premises and an accompanying code of practice.
A briefing was prepared for LARAC members and this can be read here.
Consultation Workshops
The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) held their second workshop on the development of their revised Waste Management Strategy for Northern Ireland.
The workshop considered the practicalities of landfill bans for biowastes, a new framework for regulatory licensing and enforcement of operational facilities, and behaviour change for residents for policies such as the carrier bag levy.
A meeting report was prepared for LARAC members and this can be read here.
Development of POPs guidance
The Environment Agency have just published the guidance and RPS (Regulatory Position Statements) for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). These give greater clarity how POPs items should be handled prior to incineration. Of significance for local authorities is the clarification that items such as chairs, sofas and settees, termed Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (WUDS), can now be co-collected with non-POPs items in a multi-item bulky collection from a household.
Links to all of the guidance documents and RPS can be found in the updated LARAC FAQ on managing POPs waste which is available for our members here.
