The Up and Forward project is supported by the Life+ programme of the European Commission is supported by LARAC and CIWM. Led by Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, it aims to demonstrate how innovative engagement and communication methods can help increase recycling and waste prevention in low performing urban areas. Over the past 2 years, the Up and Forward project team has delivered 42 campaigns in ‘hard to reach’ communities based on four demographic themes.

  1. Deprivation – Communities characterised by low incomes and access to limited education and opportunities.
  2. Transience – Communities characterised by a high level of movement and temporary residents.
  3. Faith and Culture – Communities characterised by strong faith or cultural beliefs.
  4. Apartments – Communities characterised by limited access to recycling facilities and structural barriers.

Since the launch of the project in 2013, the innovative approach to engagement and communication methods has led to positive changes in residents’ behaviour and attitudes towards recycling. The project has engaged with over 63,000 Greater Manchester residents , recruited and trained over 150 Recycling Ambassadors, produced 8 short films, launched a recycling game app ‘Getting Wasted’, and created interactive software to educate the public about waste reduction and recycling.

To share the achievements, results and key learning points of the project a closing seminar is being held on Tuesday 24th March 2015 at The Lowry, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.
