LARAC has viewed the launched of the recent Plastics Industry Recycling Action Plan (PIRAP) as a positive move in efforts to increase plastics recycling in the UK. LARAC believes that a focus on reprocessing and funding streams for collections is a focus on the right areas if more plastics are to end up being recycled. LARAC also views as positive the engagement with local authorities in drawing up the plan for the industry.
LARAC views the suggestion in the plan that local authorities consider collected pots, tubs and trays when they undertake a service review as a sensible one. However the decision to start collecting these types of plastics will depend very much on the industry providing a viable network for sorting and recycling.
Dave Thomas, East Midlands Representative LARAC, said “It is always good when industry takes it upon itself to put in place actions that will deliver higher recycling rates. LARAC was pleased to be able to help provide input into the discussions but local authorities need viable and sustainable markets for them to be able to commit to collections of a wider range of plastics. We hope this plan will help deliver that and we look forward to the industry delivering this.”
LARAC also supports the call for funding to flow through to local authorities to support collections that will help producers meet their obligations under packaging regulations. LARAC believes that communications is a critical tool as householders deal with a wider range of plastics and hopes that the action plan will assist local authorities in their communications work. LARAC believes that the suggestion for local authorities to consider recycling on the go is one area where producers and local authorities can work closer together to help increase recycling of packaging.
