Pathway into the Waste Industry

Andrew’s career began with a degree in Industrial Design. Graduating in the mid-to-late 1980s—a time of limited job opportunities—he came across an advert for a graduate trainee role at Staffordshire County Council’s waste disposal department. That decision sparked a lifelong commitment to the waste sector.

Highlights and Frustrations in Waste Management

What’s your biggest frustration with the waste industry?

Politics and the Government. To make meaningful change, we need bold, robust policies that prioritise reducing waste and creating a circular economy. Too often, lobbying from producers and other interests stalls progress.”

What material would you ban if you could?

Tetra Pak cartons—I hate them!”

Andrew’s Vision and Passions

If you were given £1 million to spend on waste services, what would you spend it on?

Green skills for the future. Investing in education and training is key to building a sustainable waste management sector.”

How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy gardening and historic car racing.”

Andrew’s Waste Wisdom

What’s the worst excuse for not recycling?

“‘I don’t have time.”

What’s in your bin at home?

Still too much!”

Andrew’s dedication to our sector makes him a cornerstone of the LARAC Executive. Thank you, Andrew, for sharing your journey—getting to know you better has been a pleasure!
