This week's LARAC Conference was described as "great success" by Chair Joy Blizzard. "This year saw an increased number of LARAC member delegates who were able to attend the two day conference for just £99. We worked hard with our conference providers Environment Media Group to put together a lively and thought provoking programme".
This year saw a number of themes emerge - particularly around resource use and security and how local authorities husband these resources in a difficult financial climate. There was the usual range of global and local designed to help members in the day job"
The event has always tried to balance everyday issues with how the work that we do fits into the larger global picture. Waste industry experts were able to update delegates on the state of the material markets, the waste strategies of the devolved administrations and the latest legislation from the EU. Other issues included localism in action when delivering key services, cross boundary partnerhips and the new end destination of recycling charter.
Twenty four new recycling officers were able to attend free of charge thanks Wastepack's Scholarship programme and as with previous year's the LARAC conference could not take place without the support of Event Partner UPM and a number of sponsors. The LARAC Celebration Awards were free for members to attend thanks to generous sponsorship and LARAC's encouragement of home grown talent was demonstrated by inviting previous chair and waste funny man Lee Marshall to host. His self deprecating act went down so well with the audience and was a perfect way to usher in the awards, celebrating what's best in our sector.
Presentations and photographs from the LARAC Conference will shortly be available on the LARAC Conference website
Meanwhile here are the exec in their LARAC conference tee-shirts - making sure members could identify them and pick their brains!
