LARAC has welcomed the recent call for closer working and dialogue by the Resource Association between reprocessors and local authorities as they launched a new tool designed to assist local authorities with regard to quality of materials. LARAC recently helped produced a Route Map which it has urged local authorities to use to assist them in considering their compliance with the European Waste Framework Directive and UK Waste Regulations. LARAC believe the online tool, ReQip, which the Resource Association has produced, could also be of some use to local authorities.
Andrew Bird, Chair LARAC, said "LARAC is keen to have constructive dialogue with reprocesors as we both form different parts of the same supply chain and the Resource Association is positive in its approach to local authorities. Obviously details such as contamination levels of different materials will always be a matter of the various contracts that local authorities have with each reprocessor but the tool could be useful to consider prior to procurement processes by local authorities. LARAC also welcomes the promise by the Resource Association that their members will not be bringing any challenges regarding the Waste Regulations and the issues around TEEP."
LARAC has a long working relationship with the Resource Association and is keen to continue to work together to provide appropriate quality material to the market place. However LARAC believes there is still work to be done to ensure that the right incentives and funding streams are in place to assist local authorities in collecting material of the appropriate quality whilst they continue to face and manage ongoing budget cuts.
