Garden waste is a highly searched-for topic online, with almost 20,000 searches for ‘garden waste’ and related terms on Google in the UK each month.

At PermiServ, we work closely with councils every day and get unique insights into what information residents ask local authorities for when it comes to their garden waste and recycling services.

We decided to take a closer look at what people search for online when looking for garden waste and recycling information, knowing it would both shed light on what information the public feels is missing, and benefit the conversations we have with local authorities.

We analysed search data to uncover what information the public finds unclear and how councils can better address these concerns.

Residents' Top Questions About Garden Waste

Our analysis highlights the top three Google searches related to garden waste:

  1. How to get rid of garden waste
  2. Can you take garden waste to the tip?
  3. Can you burn garden waste?

These queries suggest residents often lack clear guidance on proper disposal methods, indicating a need for more accessible council communications.

What Do Google’s Top Results Say?

For the question, "How to get rid of garden waste?", the top results include:

  • The UK Government website, redirecting users to local councils via postcode entry.
  • The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), offering composting advice and council contact suggestions.
  • LoveJunk, a platform connecting waste disposal needs with collectors, again recommending council services.

Of the first-page results, only two come directly from councils: West Sussex County Council and Adur & Worthing Councils. This highlights a gap in council-led online resources.

Recommendations for Councils

Using insights from Google search trends, councils can enhance public understanding and encourage responsible waste disposal. Suggestions include:

  • Reviewing website content: Ensure information is accurate, up-to-date, and well-signposted.
  • Creating targeted content: Address common questions with FAQs or dedicated web pages.
  • Leveraging printables and FAQs: Include clear guides with garden waste permits—PermiServ offers this as part of our services.
  • Running social media campaigns: Announce service changes and share updates instantly.

The Benefits of Improved Communication

By addressing common resident queries and simplifying access to information, councils can:

  • Boost garden waste service uptake.
  • Increase revenue from permits.
  • Reduce repetitive inquiries to save time and resources.

By understanding residents' concerns, councils can provide more effective, accessible services and foster better engagement with their communities. Need help improving your garden waste service or communications? PermiServ is here to help.
