On 1st July, over 50 local authority officers from across the UK came together in Birmingham for The Little Green Event 2026, PermiServ's annual conference dedicated entirely to garden waste services. As the UK's only event focused solely on garden waste collections, the day once again demonstrated the value of bringing councils together to share experiences, challenges and practical solutions.

The event welcomed an outstanding line-up of speakers, including representatives from WRAP, The Behaviour Change Network, Trafford Council, Highland Council, Thanet Council, KPS Composting and Routeware, who explored everything from behavioural science and resident engagement to subscription growth, communications and service optimisation. Throughout the day, delegates exchanged ideas, discussed emerging policy and took part in interactive round-table conversations designed to tackle the real-world challenges facing local authority garden waste services.
Beyond the presentations, the event was designed to encourage networking in a relaxed environment. This year's Garden Party Edition featured complimentary afternoon cake, while more than 50 plants used to set the theme for the event were gifted to attendees to take back to their workplaces or homes- a small reminder of the importance of the services they deliver every day.
The atmosphere throughout the event reinforced something we've always believed: some of the best ideas come from councils learning from one another.
As the sector continues to evolve, with increasing focus on service efficiency, resident satisfaction and operational resilience, opportunities to collaborate and celebrate success have never been more important.

One of the highlights of the day was the announcement that nominations are now open for the Garden Waste Awards 2026.
Now in their latest year, the awards recognise the individuals and teams making a real difference to garden waste services across the UK. Whether through innovation, customer engagement, operational excellence or outstanding teamwork, the awards shine a spotlight on those who often work behind the scenes to deliver high-quality services for residents.

- Best Newcomer

Nominations are free and open to local authorities across the UK. The award ceremony will be held at RWM, 16h September within the LARAC Lounge – in association with LARAC who will be judging the awards entries.
