Alupro are really excited to launch our brand-new FREE resources to support councils and local authorities in their efforts to collect and recycle even more valuable packaging made from recyclable aluminium.
Over 80% of UK councils collect aluminium foil for recycling and that figure is likely to become 100% when the governments ‘Consistency in Collections’ policy comes into force. A sampling study conducted by Resource Futures back in 2022 found that foil recycling rates varied widely across the UK, ranging from anywhere between 1-51%.
Also, recent polling by INCPEN (Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment) indicated that consumers are more likely to feel confident about recycling if they understand what happens to the material they put into their bin and are given clear information on recycling by their council.
Unfortunately, foil consistently tops WRAP’s (Waste and Resources Action Programme) consumer tracker survey as one of the most confusing packaging items for consumers to recycle. But why is this? Well, due to aluminium foils extremely versatile nature, it can be used to wrap chocolate or sandwiches, seal yoghurt or creams pots or even hold an oven meal or a takeaway. With applications this diverse, it’s understandable that consumers are unsure where to find foil in their homes and what to do to make it recycling bin ready!
#FoilFriday is a brand new, FREE social media campaign which aims to simplify aluminium foil recycling for consumers by helping them to identify foil packaging within their home and reduce contamination. The new resources are designed to link to key awareness events and themes throughout the year, such as the Women’s World Cup and BBQ Week, and are designed to be posted on your social channels every Friday using the hashtag #FoilFriday.
There are social graphics, animations, fact sheets, and suggested post copy all aimed at making the campaign as easy to use as possible. The resources will be provided in three phases from summer 2023 right through until the end of the year. The campaign resources are completely free however, we do ask that you use our hashtag when you use any of the materials to ensure that we can track the progress of the campaign.
The social media resources are free, and available to download, from the Alupro website and include Welsh language versions of each resource.
There is also an exciting competition for councils. The council who uses the #FoilFriday resources most consistently between now and the end of December, will receive £5k of funding from Alupro to run their very own foil communications campaign in 2024! The winner will be informed in January.
