We’re all looking to be a bit greener, whether that is by using less energy, reusing items or recycling more. However, individual actions alone won’t slow the impacts of climate change, and we need Governments and businesses to support these actions, making it easy for people to do the right thing.
We welcome the new Government’s commitment to moving towards a zero-waste economy through the implementation of collection and packaging reforms outlined in the October Budget. We look forward to working with them and making further progress towards a circular economy.
At FCC Environment, we’re doing all we can to help people reduce, reuse and recycle. Our approach is simple but effective: minimise landfill waste by recycling, processing, and generating energy from waste that cannot be otherwise recycled. We serve a diverse range of clients, from local authorities to businesses, ensuring that waste is managed efficiently and sustainably.
We recycle 1.5 million tonnes of waste annually and generate over 167MW of energy. This not only helps reduce the environmental impact of waste but also supports the UK’s energy needs. Our operations are extensive, employing over 4,200 people across the UK all dedicated to making a positive environmental impact.
FCC Environment’s journey began with the merger and rebranding of Focsa Services and Waste Recycling Group in May 2012. This move was part of a broader vision to create a more cohesive and efficient waste management entity. Over the years, we have expanded our services and capabilities, continuously adapting to the evolving needs of our clients and the environment.
A major acquisition in June 2024 has further solidified our standing as one of the country’s leading waste management operators. This strategic expansion has enabled us to enhance our product and service offerings, with Severn Waste Services, J&B Recycling, Wastewise and all affiliated businesses now integral to the FCC family.

Our commitment to the environment extends beyond recycling and energy generation. We are deeply invested in reuse, a critical component of the circular economy. Our reuse shops, operated in partnership with charities and local authorities, not only divert tonnes of material from landfill but also support local communities.
Research conducted by YouGov on our behalf highlights a growing public appetite for reuse. Nearly 80% of people surveyed believe that all household waste recycling centres should have a charity reuse shop nearby or onsite.
The public’s enthusiasm for reuse is not just about buying second-hand items. People are keen to donate and repair items as well. Our survey found that 73% of those without access to a reuse shop would donate to their HWRC if one were available. Additionally, 64% of people expressed a desire to learn how to repair their broken items, highlighting a shift towards a more sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle.
By encouraging reuse and repair, we help move waste up the hierarchy, creating a more circular economy where resources are valued and conserved.

We’re more than just a waste management company; we are a forward-looking business committed to sustainability and the circular economy. Our efforts in recycling, energy, and reuse are making a tangible difference, and we are excited to continue leading the way towards a more sustainable future.
