Following concerns raised by local authorities and industry representatives over the lack of progress with the exemptions for Simpler Recycling in England, specifically the proposal to ensure micro-firms are out of scope of the new requirements from April 2025 until 2027, LARAC has been given assurance from DEFRA that the exemptions are being processed and will be passed prior to the legislation starting.
This will hopefully go some way to assuring local authorities that they will not be required to collect commercial waste from micro-firms (businesses of less than 10 full time equivalent staff) from April, next year. As further regulations would be required to implement these exemptions, Ministers are currently reviewing these policies, and DEFRA hopes to provide further certainty and clarity to stakeholders as soon as possible.
