LARAC is aware that Defra has sent two letters, one to WDAs/UAs and one to WCAs regarding the transition to separate food waste collections.
- In the WDA/UA letter “Separate Food Waste Collections – implications for long-term disposal contracts – Response Required”, there is a link to a questionnaire that must be completed by 13 January 2023. Defra says in the letter “If you do not complete the questionnaire, we will take this as confirmation that there is no reason that your linked WCAs or unitary area cannot introduce weekly food waste collections alongside your existing disposal contracts.”
- In the WCA letter, “Separate Food Waste Collections”, Defra says “We will be asking your WDA, as part of the questionnaire, to confirm they have discussed with you what, if any, barriers there are to your authority introducing weekly food waste collections and how these could be overcome”.
Therefore, it is important that all WDAs and UAs complete the questionnaire and also that WDAs and WCAs in two tier areas discuss the implication of separate food waste collections in their area before the WDA completes the questionnaire.
If you have not seen the letter sent to your council, please check with your Chief Executive’s office first or contact admin@larac.org.uk if you need any further information or help.
