We have come to realise that in an article in letsrecycle.com on 27 July there has been a wrong impression given of comments made by our Chair Andrew Bird on the subject of commingled collections. The view expressed was not the view of LARAC. We apologise for any confusion this may have caused our members and partners about the position we take on this subject. Once we knew about the views attributed to us we took action and the article was corrected on 1st August.
Reflecting the LARAC Policy position, Andrew actually said; "There was no evidence to suggest comingled collections are the only viable solution and the way forward. Many authorities operate source separated systems very successfully, and in the current climate for marketing materials, they tend to command a higher value than MRF separated materials, which can then offset the additional collection costs. This will be confirmed when the work on recycling consistency is published.
Our policy position is simple, that it is for local authorities to determine which type of recycling collection service they wish to employ based on local circumstances, and each of the three main systems has its merits. What we have been saying is that there should be a standard (consistent) set of materials collected by local authorities, especially plastics, rather than how materials are collected."
We hope our members have not been disturbed by the wrong impression given of LARAC's position in the original article.
