Coffee pods are proving to be a popular addition to the items accepted at household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs).
So far in 2024 Podback has partnered with 14 local authorities, adding 64 new HWRC sites to its network of drop-off locations across the UK. This means over 2.7 million households now have access to Podback recycling in their local authority area. A further 3 million households are set to be added by upcoming launches. But there’s scope for more to join this growing number!
Podback supports HWRC collections by providing containers, site signage and marketing support materials to help launch and promote the service. Mobilisation typically takes around six weeks from agreement to launch. Once a service is live, Podback organises collections and onward logistics for the pods to its UK reprocessors, and will provide the authority with data for Waste Data Flow, meaning pods can be attributed to recycling rates.
Expanding Podback’s partnerships with local authorities to include HWRCs is part of our strategy to provide coffee pod users with simple and convenient ways to recycle. Response to the recently launched services has been overwhelmingly positive, not least because using HWRC recycling points doesn’t require special bags. Pods can be saved in any bag or container and can be tipped loose into the Podback bins on site.
Feedback from consumers tells us that people want ways to recycle that fit with their routines, and in response we’re developing a range of options, so that taking pods to the recycling centre, or dropping them off at a supermarket or coffee shop can become second nature.
