Non-Executive Adviser, Guernsey Waste
Benchmarking and Innovation Group (BIG)
Guernsey Waste has recently implemented a new waste strategy for the Island focused on the Waste Hierarchy. This has seen a major shift away from landfill to on-island segregation, processing, and export for recycling and energy recovery. This has included the introduction of a Pay-As-You-Throw system for black bag waste, and the kerbside collection of recyclables (including food waste), and has seen Guernsey achieve one of the highest household recycling rates in Europe at 73% for 2019.
In order to continue to maintain its position at the forefront of the waste industry the Guernsey Waste Board has formed a Benchmarking and Innovation Group (BIG). The aims of this Group are twofold:
- sharing and benchmarking of information with other jurisdictions and councils to measure our performance against other bodies;
- to consider alternative methods and new or innovative technologies for waste management with the aim of reducing costs and improving future performance.
The BIG meet on a quarterly basis, and it is anticipated that the Non-Executive Adviser would attend remotely if not based in Guernsey and although the level of commitment may involve some research, it is not expected that this would extend much beyond the quarterly meeting schedule.
The Non-Executive Adviser would be expected to have waste industry experience and knowledge of current waste management trends. The appointment would be for a period of two years, with an option to extend by one year by mutual agreement, and is non-remunerative.
