Last month our Chair, Carole Taylor attended a meeting of the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge Advisory Group (SSPP CAG) which also includes representatives from Defra, WRAP, retailers, plastics manufacturers and leading academics. This is the second meeting of the SSPP CAG where Carole has represented LARAC in the last couple of months.

The Challenge Advisory Group was formally constituted by UKRI – UK Research and Innovation – in order to advise on the delivery of Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging for consumer products. We are particularly pleased to be able to represent our members at these crucial early stages of this new project aiming to deliver cleaner growth across the supply chain and a dramatic reduction in plastic waste entering the environment by 2025. This is precisely the kind of arena where our members’ voices should be heard to ensure that our industry is fully sustainable in the years to come.

Giving the process to Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging a kick start, the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund has launched two competition funds which open today, 9th December.

The first is: ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: demonstrator projects, round 1

UK businesses can apply for a share of up to £12 million for practical demonstrator projects in smart and sustainable plastic packaging.

The second is: ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: feasibility studies for demonstrators

UK businesses can apply for a share of up to £700,000 to develop proposals for practical demonstrator projects in smart and sustainable plastic packaging.

While these projects are aimed at UK businesses, it’s good to know we at LARAC have a place on the advisory group guiding this very important project.
