LARAC represents members at DEFRA producer responsibility workshop and proposes radical changes to current regime

This workshop, held towards the end of March, was the last of six organised by WRAP/INCPEN, under the direction of the Secretary of State for the Environment, with the purpose of engaging with key stakeholders to gather evidence regarding opportunities to extend producer responsibility and reforming  the existing packaging recovery note (PRN) system. LARAC was represented by Lee Marshall and Dan Roberts who identified a range of opportunities and proposed solutions including a greater focus on waste prevention at the material extraction/manufacturing stage (as opposed to “end of pipe” solutions), design for reuse and recyclability, economic incentives to stimulate demand led interventions (developing stable UK markets for recyclate), including fiscal disincentives, and appropriate funding of LA collection and reprocessing systems.
