A typical UK household collection reveals a much broader range of reusable material: books, toys, kitchenware, linen, tools, small electricals, accessories, CDs, DVDs and video games. Without an accessible reuse route, many risk entering household waste systems unnecessarily.

One collection, multiple reuse streams
Anglo Doorstep Collections provides residents with a free collection service for clothing, footwear, books, media, small electricals, kitchenware, unopened toiletries, linen, toys, bags, accessories, hand tools, power tools and smaller household bric-a-brac.
Residents separate donations into three categories: clothes, including textiles, shoes and linen; books; and bric-a-brac, including toys, electrical items, CDs and DVDs. Simple instructions make participation easier and allow the goods to be categorised efficiently after collection.
Why convenience matters
Not everyone can transport several bags or boxes to a charity shop, textile bank or recycling centre. Limited transport, restricted mobility and moving multiple boxes can all become barriers.
A booked doorstep collection removes much of that friction. Residents can clear several categories at once without making separate journeys or finding a different destination for every item. Our collections average approximately 23kg of reusable material from each participating household. At scale, these contributions become substantial reuse tonnage.
Genuine reuse requires quality

Reuse is not simply another name for waste collection. Items must be in a suitable, reusable condition, so residents are asked not to donate goods that are damaged, broken or wet. We do not collect furniture, mattresses or other bulky items, and household goods must generally be no larger than a medium-sized box.
Once the collected goods reach the Anglo Recycling warehouse, they are sorted into categories and prepared for their next use. Goods are matched with suitable routes, including buyers and supply to animal shelters, children’s organisations and women’s shelters.
An opportunity for councils
For local authorities, household reuse should not be viewed as a textile only activity. A convenient multi-stream service can complement arrangements by giving residents another route for reusable goods that might otherwise enter residual waste or be taken to a recycling centre.

Anglo Doorstep Collections provides the collection infrastructure, booking system, operational capacity and reuse reporting at no cost to the local authority. Councils can support the service through their websites, newsletters and social media. Our experience shows that when councils communicate the service, household participation and reuse tonnage increase.
The next step in improving household reuse may not be another container for a single material. It may be giving residents one simple way to reuse many different things.
